Earlier this year, ISF Chief Executive Steve Durbin revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer. He had no symptoms and no family history. Six months on, and nearing the end of 37 sessions of radiotherapy, he sits down with producer Tavia Gilbert for a deeply personal conversation.
Steve explains how a routine PSA blood test uncovered his cancer, why he interviewed his medical team like job candidates, and how an athlete’s mindset carried him through treatment. He also reflects on what it means for a leader to show vulnerability.

I did not see my cancer as making me a sick person. I happen to have a cancer.

Key takeaways:

  • Early detection saves lives.
  • Take control of your treatment. Steve chose his oncologist the way he’d hire for a role.
  • Vulnerability is a leadership strength. Cancer showed Steve that leaders aren’t invincible, and letting his softer side through has made him more empathetic without weakening his decision-making.

We are delighted to share that ISF has joined forces with Prostate Cancer Research (PCR) in a new two‑year partnership designed to increase awareness of prostate cancer and empower our Members and their networks to make informed health decisions.
